Established in 1865 by José Gener in the Vuelta Abajo region, Hoyo de Monterrey refers to the typical geography of the farmland used for the premium tobacco plantations. There is also a Hondurian Hoyo de Monterrey cigar brand that was started after the Cuban revolution. However, the original brand is Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey that is mentioned here. The Hoyo de Monterrey brand is known to roll excellent quality mild-medium cigars in various sizes, the most famous being the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure No.2, the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure De Luxe and the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure Especial. Around the middle of the 20th century, the Le Hoyo series was launched for a Swiss distributor, A. Dürr Co, and these cigars are generally stronger than the regular Hoyos.
